Each week, I round up the best resources, articles, and videos I find that are relevant to finding freedom from porn and sexual addiction. Please note that by posting a link here it does not mean I agree with everything in the linked article. It just means I found it interesting enough to share.

Patheos | Megan Phelps-Roper Talks About How and Why She Left Westboro Baptist Church

“This has been at the front of my mind lately, because I can’t help but see in our public discourse so many of the same destructive impulses that ruled my former church. We celebrate tolerance and diversity more than at any other time in memory, and still we grow more and more divided. We want good things — justice, equality, freedom, dignity, prosperity — but the path we’ve chosen looks so much like the one I walked away from four years ago…”

Wm. Paul Young | Lie #1: God loves us, but doesn’t like us

“Even those who don’t believe that God exists are desperate to know that love does and that love knows who we are. More, we are driven from within to take the risk to ask of someone or Someone, Do you find anything in me that is lovable, that is enough, that is worthy of being loved?”

CovenantEyes | 6 Common Myths Wives of Porn Users Believe

“Porn is about escaping real life and entering into a fantasy world. It’s for numbing out—the exact opposite of what sex is designed to do, which is to be a way to engage intimately with your spouse. Your offering of more opportunity to engage does not satiate his need to numb out.”

9Marks | Singleness, Same-Sex Attraction, and the Church

“On the one hand, we should help our same-sex attracted single friend know that their struggle with sin may feel unique, but it’s not fundamentally different. Each individual we pastor or disciple is an image bearer who experiences the consequence of the Fall: original sin, indwelling sin, and actual sin.”

Brad Hambrick | Manipulative Repentance: 8 Red Flag Phrases

“In this post, I hope to accomplish two things. First, I will attempt to clarify two common misperceptions about manipulation. Second, I will discuss a series of phrases commonly used in repentance which can be red flags that the remorse being expressed will not lead to healthy relational restoration.”

Preston Sprinkle | What Is A Christian Sexual Ethic?

“Most people today view marriage as a contract between two consenting people, who commit to loving each other until they fall out of love with each other, in which case they can break the contract and go about their way. When consent is the only rule, two adults can pretty much use marriage anyway they see fit.”

Michael Kelley | Kids, Asparagus, and the Command of Jesus

“In the end, though, our kids are compliant. They will eat it. Sure, it will be with plenty of drama as they force feed it to themselves one bite at a time, washed down with gallons of whatever drink they have, but after a couple of hours they will get it down. Because they are compliant, they will obey my command and go through the mechanics of eating what I tell them to eat.”

Key Life | Radical Grace… is Radical

“I mean exactly what I teach and, no matter how shocking, heretical and radical it sounds, it’s exactly what the Bible teaches about grace. In fact, it is the essence of the Christian faith. In our efforts to be religious, right and righteous, we sometimes forget how shocking and counterintuitive the message really is. Telling Christians that God will never be angry at them no matter what they do, where they go or how badly they screw up can be disconcerting.”

Living Out | Peter’s Story

In Christ: Your Sins are Forgiven

In Christ: Your Sins Are Forgiven "In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace" (Ephesians 1:7).

An Announcement, a New Book, and a Giveaway!

Hey friends,

It’s been awhile, hasn’t it? There are a few reasons for why I haven’t been very active around here, and perhaps those will warrant a more detailed explanation in the near future, but for now, I’ve logged back in to give you some exciting news:

I’ve got a new book coming out in less than a month!

And the best part is, you can read this book in public without having to hide the cover (I’m looking at you, 10 Lies Men Believe about Porn).

52 Things Cover

52 Amazing Things That Became True of You the Moment You Trusted Christ will be available April 4th pretty much everywhere (Amazon, iBook Store, Barnes & Noble, from the trunk of my car on the street corner… you get the idea).

This awesome little book unpacks many of the verses in Scripture describing who you are “In Christ” to help you understand more fully who God says you are, and what these truths mean for you personally—all of which can be deeply transformational and life-changing.

If this all sounds familiar to those of you who have been around for a while, you’re not having a case of deja vu. This book is a re-release of my old, self-published book, Done. Now that FaithWords has published it though, it will be available to a much greater audience (not to mention it has a snazzy new hard-cover as well).

Anyways, on to the giveaway!

We’ve got a couple of great prizes you can win by pre-ordering 52 Things prior to the launch on April 4th:

Prize #1: Pre-order 1 or more copies and you’ll be entered to win 1 of 5 hour-long Skype calls with me to chat about anything you want (the content of 52 Things, topics related to 10 Lies Men Believe about Porn, Star Wars, Legos, politics, etc.). Not only that, I’ll send each winner a Starbucks gift card so we can both have fancy coffee on our call (just as if we were meeting up in person!).

Prize #2: Pre-order 5 or more copies and I will send you a signed hard copy of 52 Things as well as entering you into the drawing for the Skype call.

IMPORTANT: For either option, all you need to do is email me a screen shot or photo of your receipt showing a purchase date prior to April 4th to be entered. Easy peasy.

And just in case you missed all the previous links:

PRE-ORDER 52 THINGS HERE!

Thanks again friends. I always appreciate the gift that it is to share these truths with such a wonderful group.

Good luck! I look forward to talking with some of you soon.

Wm. Paul Young | Lie #25: God is Disappointed in Me

“God knows you, completely, fully, and with unrelenting affection. You don’t surprise God. God delights in you, as you delight in your own children; God also grieves for and with you when you act inside your lies and darkness—but not because God expected more of you.”

Benjamin Corey | There’s Only Two Types Of “Christian” (And You Should Be Able To Tell The Difference)

“It doesn’t matter what kind (denomination) of Christian you are; there are still only two types: one is the member of a Christian religion, and the other is someone who is actively living like Jesus.”

Relevant | 5 Misconceptions About Waiting for Marriage

“The Bible speaks a lot about renewal and restoration, and if you have had sex in the past, don’t let that fact, and the shame that may accompany it, determine your future.”

CovenantEyes | 6 Ways to Raise a Sex Addict

“A child who doesn’t feel unconditional love usually doesn’t experience a lot of affection and non-sexual touch. Having never developed a strong attachment to a caregiver, sex addicts do not have the skills to have an intimate relationship as an adult. Healthy touch and intimacy can actually be uncomfortable.”

AndSons | What to do When You Find Yourself Hating Your Life

“I can honestly say now that looking back over the 30 years since I was 26, I am so profoundly grateful God did not tell me everything that was going to go down. It would have been overwhelming; I wouldn’t have been able to take the next step or the one after that. What he gave me was the next step, each step of the way. What you get is a conversation; what is offered is simply the next step.”

Gospel Coalition | Three Lies We Might Easily Believe

“It is very much in the Devil’s interests that we despair. If he can get us to believe any of these three demoralizing lies that he loves to whisper into our thoughts, our powers for Jesus are greatly diminished. And each one seems to us quite plausible.”

Paul Robinson | Living with Trolls as a Codependent Addict

“As a former addict, an addict who is a Christian at that, anytime my addiction took a hold of me it evoked strong feelings of shame and guilt. These feelings similarly didn’t exist in a vacuum but in the middle of relationships and how I responded to everyday life. So you know, everything. It produced a strong co dependency in me where I needed others to be cool with me, since I was definitely not cool with myself.”

Experimental Theology | Lovin’ On the Freakshow Sitting Next to You: The Church According to Twenty One Pilots

“Both Jesus and TØP have friendships with ‘heathens,’ relationships with the criminal, the immoral, the broken and the insane. They bring these ‘heathens’ to the church. And the request is for the church to welcome these “heathens” with gentleness and compassion. Take it slow, church, don’t make sudden moves. People are fragile and weak. What you see on the outside will tempt you toward judgment and harshness. But you don’t know half of the abuse.”

CovenantEyes | How to React the First Time Your Child Admits Watching Porn

“A parent’s first reaction is so critical. The first words out of our mouth, the first body language we express, has an enormous impact on any future success we may have helping our child. It’s worth thinking about and trying to plan for.”

Relevant | Feelings Don’t Rule Our Lives

“What do you do when your emotions are so out of alignment that you can’t see straight? When your thoughts betray you, accuse you and confuse you? When both the world around you and the world within you are equally devoid of hope and happiness? What do you do when your soul hurts?”

Gospel Coalition | I Am Not Disgusting. I Am Not Alone. I Am Redeemed.

“I realized I didn’t have some kind of unusual disease; I was just human. I didn’t have to try to be straight in order follow God’s will for my life. I knew my sexuality described so much of me, but I discovered it didn’t define me. As a Christian, Jesus defined me, and he looked at me with love.”
